Authentic Beauty – Makeup Tips for Asian Brides
We love working with all different types of people. While there are some general rules that apply for all, there are also very important tips and techniques that need to be considered when working with different ethnicities.
Binbin is a classic Asian beauty. Her bridal party was an amazing group of ladies, they were so much fun! We loved doing their makeup because each one had such amazing attributes! Their stunning-deep set eyes, wide faces, full lips and perfectly straight shiny hair really made me remember why we just love our job so much. We love playing up such unique beauty.
Asian Beauty Tips
Brows: Brows are always done with a powder since typically the hair is very sparse so I don’t use pencil. This would make them look to heavy
Eyes: Always kept simple but one thing to do is line all the way around the eye to bring out the eye, always thicker on top than bottom. This really makes their eyes stand out. Smokey eyes look beautiful however always keep the darkest shadow near the edge of the top lids and bit all over that will look to heavy the other tip for drawing attention to the eyes is to use a shimmering shadow this reflects light and makes the eyes stand out
Cheeks: I like to use a rosy blush to the apples of the cheeks
Lips: No special rules for lips it all works!
Bridal Portraits with a Boho-Beauty
We cannot stress enough the importance of scheduling a bridal portrait/makeup/hair/dress trial run before your wedding day. If nothing else, what bride doesn’t want to get all dressed up in her gown and have a photo shoot! Our bride today and our good friend, Jessica Durivage-Kerridge found that her bridal portrait was a crucial piece to making sure her wedding day style was pulled off without a hitch. Photos by Lynn Daly.
Three Reasons Why You Can’t Live Without a Bridal Portrait
1. Hair/Makeup/Dress Trial Run
We were lucky enough to know Jessica personally, having done her makeup several times for fashion shows and fundraisers over the years. We knew her style. She is a local yoga teacher with an elegant and classic bohemian flair. On the day of her bridal portrait she had her hair done first and then came to see us for her makeup. She was in tears, as the “dream hair” she had envisioned was not at all what she got. Her photographer was quick to think about another local hair stylist who was great with bridal up-do’s, called her and Jessica was in her chair within the hour having her hair completely taken down and put back up again. What if this had happened on her wedding day? YIKES! She also found that even though her dress had been taken in and altered by a seamstress, when she started moving around in it, it was not falling and sitting correctly. She was able to take it back to the bridal boutique (Little White Dress!) and they happily made sure it was absolutely perfect before she walked down the aisle. Having your makeup done before the big day is no different! You might discover you want a bolder lip or softer eyes. We have the time to play and explore to ensure you are completely happy. It gives you a chance to see your whole wedding day look all together, before you actually need to walk down the aisle.
2. Get To Know Your Vendors
Being able to spend a few hours with your vendors (makeup artists, hair stylists, photographer) before your wedding day helps US to get to know YOU just as much as it helps you to know us. Weddings are all about family, and we know we can speak for Makeup Artistry on Location, that there is no greater honor or privilege than to feel like part of the family of the bride on your big day. You will feel more relaxed with your look, because you have already seen pictures of yourself. You will feel more confident in front of the camera because you will have spent a few hours with your photographer already doing the whole super model thing. Work it, girl! It’s YOUR day!
3. On Your Own Clock
Regardless of how many times a bride insists that she will “stay in the present moment” on her wedding day, she will, at some point admit that the day just went by too fast. It is a whirlwind of tiny details, questions, hugs, stealing kisses from your groom and trying to nibble on some of the fantastic food that you picked out. During your bridal portrait, there is no pressure. You have time to play with props, jewelry, different locations, etc. It is all about you.

Wedding Day Makeup Must Have – Lip Gloss!
There are a few things no bride should be without on her wedding day, other than her rings! But, lip gloss definitely comes in at a close second! Unless you have chosen a specific “look” for your day that includes a matte lipstick, be SURE to purchase the lip gloss (same brand and color!) that your makeup artist uses on your during your trial run and for the big day.
Your lips are getting more action than normal on your wedding day. Smiling for photos, kissing hellos and goodbyes to relatives. You want to have something quick and easy to keep your face looking fresh. Lip gloss is your secret weapon!
Applying lips gloss is super easy – but there are a few steps to follow so your lips don’t feel sticky or so that the gloss does not clump up on you in the corners of your mouth.
Makeup Tip: Lipgloss Application
Tools Needed: Lip Gloss, Lip Brush
1. Apply the gloss with a lip brush. We can help you pick out the right brush to go along with your gloss.
2. Using the brush, begin at the middle of the lips.
3. Apply gloss to both the bottom and the top lips.
4. Wipe the edges of the lips with your finger when finished (don’t forget to wash your hands!)
5. Viola! Lips look fuller and more hydrated!
A Natural Look for a Southern, Summertime Wedding
Sara was referred to me by the Bobbi Brown counter. She wanted a very natural look and of course, Bobbi Brown is renowned for bringing out a woman’s natural beauty, so that is the look we went for. It was perfect for a southern summertime wedding!
Sara is a beautiful person inside and out. We had an instant connection (we love it when this happens and it often does!). Sara’s stepmom, Beth was in love with the look Sara chose. We enjoyed our time with them so much.
It is so important to understand firsthand what the individual wants and then be able to create that by enhancing what is right, whether it be the skin tone, color of their eyes, brightening or concealing and truly bringing out the inner beauty that is there in every woman/person!

You Are What You Eat
If there was going to be one time in your life when you were going to make nutrition a priority – take it from US! Do it before your wedding! No amount of makeup or facials or skin peels can account for the beautiful, glowing skin you get from eating well and of course, drinking plenty of water. Oh, and we know that you want to have that last night of freedom with your girlfriends – and that is all well and good, but plan it several weeks before the wedding day! The effects of one wild night can wreak havoc on your skin and take a few days to get back to normal.
What exactly are the best foods to eat? Here are our Top 6 Foods to feed your face fabulous!
Eggs (the yolks in particular) are filled with Vitamin A.
Vitamin A is an antioxidant that is essential for the growth of new skin cells. Have you every thought of slathering some raw eggs all over your face? No? Think again, it boosts collagen production and promotes skin cell turnover.
Eat your GREENS!
You know what they say, “A salad a day gets glowing skin on your wedding day!” Take a pass on the iceberg lettuce and replace it with spinach, romaine and kale. These leafy greens are all high in Vitamin B which increases the fatty acids in the skin and promotes exfoliation and firmness.
Just Grab an Orange!
It’s so easy! Oranges are a super healthy snack and they are filled with Vitamin C. The letter C in our vitamin dictionary is the building block for one of our favorite things: Collagen! Collagen is what gives skin elasticity (meaning no drooping!). It also helps with tone and structure
Skip the Steak and go for the Salmon instead
You might think that milk is the only place to get your Vitamin D, but think again! Milk is a great source of course, and along our travels we have definitely come across many people with a sensitivity to dairy, and salmon is a great alternative.
Pass the nuts, please!
Our love affair with Vitamin E is just filled with pure romance, because E does not disappoint. Almonds, dates, walnuts and other members of that nutty family are a wonderful source for Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that helps build and maintain healthy skin tissue (A.K.A. – GLOW).
Avocado-you
Yes, we love you Avocado. We love you because you are just one beautiful skin recharger all wrapped up in a wonderful, edible package. Get your street smarts on FATS and learn that there are some great ones out there and avocados top our list of one of the best foods to eat for skin health. Avos are filled with unsaturated fats and is necessary for supple skin and soft, shiny hair.

Beauty is an inside job. Everyday. And, your wedding day is a day when you want that inner beauty to radiate out with the help of a gorgeous gown, fabulous hair and of course – amazing makeup. We love our brides and we consider ourselves pretty lucky to be able to spend that special one on one time with them during their makeup consult and on their wedding day to do their makeup. For some brides, this is the only time that day they are able to stop, slow down and breathe. After years of falling in love with our brides, we consider ourselves “experts” in the field of dishing out great “pre-wedding” advice to help you look and feel your best on this important day.
Here are our Top 5 Pre-Wedding Day Wellness Tips
1. Eat Smart
The months and weeks leading up to your big day is the perfect time to start making a few healthy changes to your diet. Maybe you commit to making a Green Smoothie every morning or eating a salad twice per day. Whole grains, fresh greens, fruits and clean proteins such as chicken and fish will have you feeling fabulous in your gown in no time! Check out this great recipe for a green smoothie that supports skin health here!
2. HYDRATE!
We cannot stress this enough! Not only is drinking LOTS and LOTS of water amazing for your health – it can also make or break your wedding day makeup. Adding lemon to your water also helps to re-alkaline the body. Huffington post shares a great article on why drinking lemon water is so good for you!
3. Moves Like Jagger
Be it Zumba, Vinyasa Style Yoga, Running, Swimming, Cycling, Dancing – whatever! Move that body at LEAST three times per week for three months before your wedding day.
4. Take a Bath!
The weeks leading up to your wedding day can be filled with continuing to fill up your to-do lists, communicating a lot with family members, trying to keep yourself organized and also remembering what it is all about! Give yourself the gift of 20 minutes each evening to take a relaxing soak in the tub.
5. Be Present
Cliche? We think not. It is the age old advice everyone shares with brides and it could not be more true. The more present you are, the more you can take in the joy and excitement of the moments leading up to your big day.
During our pre-wedding makeup consultations, we find ourselves sharing these tips over and over again with our brides and you know what? The ones that follow them show up in our chair on their wedding day happy, healthy and ready to look and feel their best on their big day.

Airbrushed vs Traditional Makeup
We get asked often by our brides if airbrushed makeup is a better option for the big day. We get requests by clients just because they heard it was great. Well, over the past 5 years, airbrush machines and products have been popping up all over. Of course, there is a lot of hype about how wonderful it is and it’s a great choice for the right texture of skin and when a specific look is desired. The big secret is that because it is a fine sheer mist when applied and it only looks good on skin that is without texture and is already in decent condition. Most Pros and respected celebrity makeup artists use traditional makeup, because it is more precise and targeted. Traditional foundation offers a variety finishes and coverage. Because, the finish is in hand-blending, you can work the product into skin that may have some texture issues. Traditional application allows you to select makeup for the skin type and not just one color and one airbrush finish. No need to worry about ruining an airbrush finish since the finish is largely contingent upon your skill as an artist and not a machine. Not to mention, traditional foundation is more flexible when it comes to building up or sheering down coverage and for contouring and highlighting the face. As a Pro artists, we prefer traditional makeup applications because of the control in the final outcome. For Mary & I there is not substitute for hands-on application.
